From drifting to rooting: the urban aborigines who portray the glorious years of Keelung fishery

The life style and mood portrayal of the people of the Northern Floating People are not only the impression of wandering. A group of Amis people from the east northward, with the original hometown life and the port capital of Keelung, mixed into a unique urban aboriginal settlement, and took root and family here.

The development of Keelung fishery gave birth to the settlement of Alabao Bay

In the 1950s and 1960s, the rapid growth of Keelung's fishery development led to a rapid increase in the number of fishing boats in the Zhengbin Fishing Port and Bachimen Fishing Port of Heping Island, which affected the prosperity of the neighboring shipbuilding industry. A large number of foreign fishermen poured into the Keelung Fishing Port, including the success of Taitung and the capital. The Ami people in the country came to Heping Island with their families to earn a living, and gradually built houses on the idle land in the foothills of the east side of Heping Island, forming a settlement in Alabao Bay.

Even though people living in the Alabao Bay settlements live in the city, they still retain the Ami community’s habits, organizational characteristics, and respect for traditional culture. However, under the influence of the surrounding environment and the pressure of livelihood, coupled with the lack of a suitable indoor place in the settlement, the cultural inheritance has encountered obstacles, such as "weaving", "cross stitch", and "mother tongue". Indigenous culture faces generational gaps.

The significance and construction process of the Talo’an assembly hall

In "The meaning of the assembly hall is not just an activity space, it is the core of the settlement, but also a medium for cultural inheritance." Beginning in May this year, the local people will be located in Tongtong under the integration of the "Alabao Bay Aboriginal Settlement Regeneration Project" team. Moving to the East Fort of Sheliao, an unused Zhongshan room was gradually renovated as a gathering "talo'an."

The Talu case (talo’an) is a gathering place for the Amis language. It has a very important position in a tribe and has religious, political, and economic significance. Tribal residents use this as a place for assembly meetings, public affairs announcements, and age organization learning skills and collective training. In addition, the assembly hall also contains the purpose of cultural inheritance, where it can teach the traditional culture of the indigenous people such as "handicrafts, mother tongue, dance and singing", so that the next generation can understand their own culture, condense the centripetal force of the settlement, and treat themselves as an aboriginal. The nation is proud and spreads it outward.

The tribesmen used the weekend rest time to evaluate the current situation, design ideas, and construction procedures. After many meetings and discussions, they built the ideal assembly place in their hearts bit by bit, and put themselves into the construction project. Even in the event of unsatisfactory weather conditions, in order to maintain progress, work is often started in the rain. Although the construction process was laborious, the people did not change their humor and optimistic character. When implementing the roof waterproofing project, the roof was improvised to turn the roof into a stage to stimulate more possibilities for the use of space. When the singing sounded in the mountains and forests, the joyous atmosphere also infected everyone.

The change of settlement is fermenting

At first, the idle space was full of garbage and debris. From removing debris, digging windows, and repairing roof waterproofing, the project continues, and the blueprint for the future of the assembly hall is gradually clear. In the process, the tribesmen extended their thoughts on issues related to the future development and cultural heritage of the settlement from the space requirements, and hoped that the assembly hall would be built into a multi-purpose place in the future. It is helpful in industry, economy, education and cultural inheritance. By offering courses related to industrial skills and traditional aboriginal culture, it can also be used as an after-school tutoring and learning place for children. Improve the quality of life and strengthen the connection with the environment, transforming tribal cultural traditions into sustainable development resources.

With the changing of times, these people from Beipiao used their life experience to portray the glorious years of Keelung fishery. With the changes in Keelung's industry, they face various challenges in life with strong vitality, and continue the wisdom and cultural spirit passed down by their ancestors.
