The remains of Dashawan Stonewall

The remains of Dashawan Stonewall are located in Lane 105, Zhongzheng Road, Zhongzheng District, Keelung City. It is also behind the official residence of Keelung Fortress Headquarters (No. 111 and 113, Zhongzheng Road, Keelung City). The north side is now a container terminal, and the south side is Keelung Fortress Headquarters school officials’ house, the east side is a three-story house, the west side is adjacent to the 105 laneway of Zhongzheng Road, and the surrounding buildings are mostly 3 to 5 floors.

The main battlefield of the French War

The establishment of forts in Keelung began in the West Holland period. After the transfer of power, the forts still surrounded Burkeelung Port, especially during the Qing Dynasty. In view of the invasion of pirates and the coveting of foreign countries, many forts were set up inside and outside the entrance. The positions of these forts have also been changed due to the war, especially in the Shawan area. The comparison of maps proved that the main battle fort that experienced the French War was not the Ershawan Fort, the predecessor of "Haimen Tianxian", but the Dashawan Fort, the predecessor of the Dingshige Fort. The setting of this fort can be traced back to Before 1840 (Twenty Years of Daoguang).

Shiwei is located in Dashawan, the main battlefield of the Qing-French War. Before the French War of the Qing Dynasty, the Dashawan Fort was a flat fort built on the flat terrain along the coast. It was susceptible to the erosion of the wall foundation by the tide, so the stone wall was used for moisture prevention. And because the gun site is obvious, the stone wall of the fort is prone to shelling, so it is necessary to build a stone fence to defend the fort. At the same time, in order to make up for the difficult short-term attack of the main battle battery in Dashawan, another earth fort was built in the stone enclosure for soldiers to garrison, and light artillery was placed. A simple fort was used to assist in the defense of the fort. Therefore, the existing relics of Dashawan Shek Wai, including the two parts of the earth wall and the earth wall.

Load-bearing flat-type fort-type soil barrier

The relics of Dashawan, which resembled earth enclosures and barriers, were not temporary military projects, but were planned in response to the requirements of flat-type fortresses. For example, according to the standards of foreign ships and guns, although they belong to the indigenous method of steelmaking, they are not a temporary military project. Also hit the British and French flagships. However, after the Qing-French War, Liu Ming Chuan took shape and built a highland fort in Xuqiu and the mountainous area between Ershawan and Dashawan. Because this type of fort has a natural shelter to avoid shelling, the damaged Dashawan soil enclosure and fortification have lost the necessity of military defense, so there is no discussion about repairing it, and the ruins are abandoned on the original site.

Experienced Opium and the War of Qing Dynasty/A rare and precious relic today

There are very few historical relics left in Taiwan that have experienced the Opium War and the French War. With the development of settlements and urban development, the incumbents are also facing a crisis of survival. Keelung Dashawan Shiwei is one example. Although there are only relics left in Shiwei, the historical significance of participating in the two historic battles in Keelung is definitely no less than that of the natural dangers of Haimen, even more so.

Looking at the surrounding environment, Dashawan Shiwei is adjacent to the sea to the north and mountains to the south, making this area an important area of coastal defense in North Taiwan. The surrounding cultural assets, such as the national historic site Ershawan Fort (Haimen Natural Insurance), and the municipal historic site during the Qing-French War The memorial park, the residence of the commander of the Keelung Fortress, the residence of the official family of the fortress command, and the monument to the national heroes of historical buildings, the overall environment carries many memories.
